A message from the President xmas tree

On behalf of TWPI, welcome to the December newsletter.

I am pleased to announce that TWPI now has a gold sponsor – Integrity Sampling.  We thank them for their support and it will assist the TWPI in growing our programs.  We hope this is the first of many sponsors for the TWPI.

The U16 Boys and Girls teams had successful trips to Nationals in Melbourne back in October.  The Girls finished a credible 12th, only losing two games in the tournament.  The Boys finished 14th out of 24 teams, but steadily improved throughout the tournament.  Thanks to all the coaches, managers and parents who enabled these teams to travel to Melbourne and compete so successfully.

TWPI held it’s AGM in November.  The new board is working on finalising a five year Strategic Plan and starting implementation in the New Year, as well as planning the competitions for 2012.  A full list of the board members can be found on the TWPI website.

The club competition is coming to a close. Congratulations to all participants, especially those that made the Grand Finals.  Thank you to all the coaches and officials for making the competition possible, and to all the spectators for their support.

The TWPI was able to run a very successful Flippa Ball competition from October to early December at THAC.  In all, there were 14 teams across two divisions – Grade 3-4 and Grade 5-6.  Competitions were held on Friday nights in the shallow pool, with training available to all players on Tuesday nights.  Plans are being finalised to run a Flippa Ball competition first term 2012.  Going forward, we hope to increase the number of participants and use as feeder program to our schools and club competitions.  It will also serve as a model for running similar competitions in other parts of the State.

As always, as a small volunteer run organisation, we are always looking for assistance to keep our programs running and expanding. If you would like to help out in anyway, please contact TWPI or one of the board members.

Regards,
John Pankiw

Team Reports - October 16 and Under Club Championships

Boys Team Report

Congratulations to the boys on a very successful championships at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre. A good team effort resulted in a 14th place finish out of 24 teams overall.

A busy schedule over the first 3 days saw us play 5 group stage matches. We finished 4th in our group after 2  wins and 3 losses. The opening match was a hard fought 6 to 4 loss against Richmond, who had the advantage of home town support. We lost to the highly fancied teams from Cronulla and University of Western Australia, and had our wins against Melville and University of New South Wales.

The 4th place finish pitched us against the first-placed team from group C in our first playoff match. Central Coast were too strong for our excellent defensive tactics and our shot at a quarter final ended in a hard fought loss.

The next 3 playoff matches were against higher ranked opposition and included a great chance demonstrate our rapid improvement with a return match against Richmond. A great performance resulted in a big turnaround and an 8 to 4 victory. We lost the final playoff 9 to 6 against the Brisbane Barracudas resulting in the respectable 14th spot.

All the players were exhausted each day, playing hard and enjoying the atmosphere. A comfortable hotel and Melbourne's public transport made for short commuting and a solid home base to recover in.

We ate well, discovering the Pool Room at the Clarendon Hotel, where $12 chicken parmies and steaks in our own area provided the major refuelling activity for 4 nights. A team dinner at Taco Bills for the boys and parents was heaps of fun. Fantastic catering from Sara and Maddie Blackman and Jill Franks resulted in healthy fresh lunches and snacks every day.

Saturday night was Crown food hall night where the girls and boys team finally were able to catch up. A couple of games of laser skirmish finished off the entertainment.

Thanks to the boys for their excellent attitude, ability to not end up losing any property that we couldn’t find eventually and responsible behaviour. Their maturity made the trip a pleasure to manage. Well done, to the senior squad members and to the boys who have the opportunity to try again next year.

Thanks to John Cody for the early mornings and expert coaching and the mentoring all the way from selection to the final matches.

Thanks to Tom Nesbitt for his refereeing and being part of the team during training and whilst away, the boys really enjoyed his presence on the trip.
I would also like to thank the parents who travelled, supported and cheered and to congratulate the organisers of a well run tournament.

Girls Team Report

After 5 months of training 3 times a week along with additional swimming training 3 times a week we arrived in Melbourne ready to compete in the 16 and Under National Club Championships.  We had 2 games on our first day and had a narrow loss to Brisbane Barracudas and an exciting win over Melbourne Collegians.  On the second day we had a loss in the morning to Cronulla Blue but then with a fantastic win over Ovens & Murray in the afternoon.
We only had 1 game on day 3 so went to support the Tassie Boys team and had a quick stop at the Eureka Skydeck (300 metres above Melbourne) on our way back to our next game.  Some of the team didn’t have to pretend to be scared for the photo!
We had a tough game Thursday morning against ladder leaders of Group C, Sydney Northern Beaches but then had a convincing win in the afternoon over Cronulla Black.
We finished off the competition with 2 losses but finished a credible 12th overall.
We caught up with the boys for tea on our last night and enjoyed laser skirmish with them before we made our way the next morning to the Melbourne Aquatic Centre for the girls Grand Final.
Before we flew home we managed to spend a few well earned hours at the DFO.  Everyone had a fantastic trip and we have already organised to catch up before Christmas.   Thanks to our Coach- Brett Newell-his support and enthusiasm made the trip very enjoyable.  Also thanks to David Salter our referee who also encouraged us throughout the trip.

Nickname: Klaus
Favourite Colour: Yellow
Favourite Music:
The girls who were in the 2009 16 & Under Nationals team tried to introduce me to a whole bunch of new music, but if I go to my iTunes most played list it is: Queen, AC/DC, U2, David Bowie, Kings of Leon.
What I love about Water Polo:
It is a fast, skilful ball game and unlike other physical games, players do not have the harsh contact from someone running at you and knocking you off your feet to the ground.
Greatest Reward/Proudest Moment:
After training 5 times a week, this years 14 & Under Girls who got off to an excellent start at the Easter National championships. They created a lot of buzz with their performance.
Proudest Achievements in Water Polo:
Seeing the young players learn and execute things that I have been able to pass on to them at training.
If you had the chance to go back in time for 24 hours, where and when would you go? :
Back to Vanuatu for a longer holiday.
