TWPI Girls and Boys 16 and under representative teams go well at the AWPI Nationals in Melbourne.

The Tasmanian 16 & Under Girls impressed all spectators and fellow competitors during the week long National Championships in Melbourne coming a respectable 12th out of 24 teams. Excellent efforts were displayed by all the players who gelled together well and played as a competitive team, backing up an amazing performance by the captain Emma Newell. Emma scored 28 goals and was heavily marked by the opposition teams in each game as they tried to curb her offensive threat. Stella Salter displayed strength beyond her years at both ends of the pool and was awarded the Coaches Award. Goalie Molly Towns was brilliant in holding off many attacks by the stiff opposition. All the girls, along with coach Brett Newell should be congratulated for the huge improvement over the 2010 performance of 20th place. Thanks also for the support and guidance from our referee David Salter.

Lisa Harris, Team Manager

Congratulations to the Tasmanian 16 & Under Boys team for finishing a creditable 14th out of 24 teams during last weeks National Champs. They steadily improved during the week, winning 2 group stage games. They had a significant win over Richmond in the playoffs, which was sweet revenge for our narrow loss to them during the group stage. A marvellous defensive effort, led by Jamie Welsh in goal kept us competitive in the water. Our attack was also formidable, with most players scoring. Congratulations to Toby Verrier for scoring well over 20 goals. All the boys put in a mammoth effort and and should be very proud of their achievements.
Big thank you to John Cody for a magnificent coaching effort and Tom Nesbitt for a very polished refereeing performance.

HOW TO PLAY (SUMMARY)

INTERESTED IN PLAYING? HERE IS A BRIEF SUMMARY OF HOW TO PLAY-
The objective of the game is to manouvre the ball into the goals at either end of the pool. Each team has seven players (one of whom is the goalie) in the water, with up to 5 interchange players. You can only use one hand to advance the ball (only the goalie can use two hands).
The game (& each quarter) begins with the ball in the centre of the pool and each team sprints for it from their own goal line. The defensive player is not allowed to interfere with the opponents movements unless he/she is holding the ball. A minor foul is awarded for this offence. The attacking player must then either pass the ball, drop it on the water and pick it up again, or shoot (if inside 5 metres). A penalty shot, from 5 metres is awarded for fouls near the goal that prevented a probable goal- Its a bit like soccer in the water!
There are unlimited substitutes so you can play in short bursts (which often suites beginners).
For the full rules of the game see the rules link above.
THE GAME IS LOADS OF FUN, GREAT EXERCISE AND PLAYED BY SOME OF THE FINEST HUMAN BEINGS ON THE PLANET.. so get along to your nearest club and have a go!   Ages 10 to 50+
