Some good news...

A Boys and a Girls team represented Tasmania at the 14 and Under National Club Water Polo Championships held in Brisbane over the Easter school holidays.

There were 15 Girls and 15 Boys teams from across Australia competing in Brisbane. After several months of training the Tasmanian players have gain much from the experience of playing at this very high level against the best in the country.

The Tasmanian teams had fourteen girls and fourteen boys and only one of these youngsters had represented the state in Water Polo before. Both teams improved greatly each game they played and were thrilled when out of all the teams competing; both goalies from Tasmania were named as the goalie of the championships.

This is a great honour for these excellent players. Molly Towns for the girls and Cameron Lewis for the boys. Water Polo is very strong on the mainland states and for two Tasmanians to walk away with 2 of the 6 trophies on offer was an outstanding effort.

Both Molly and Cameron will look forward to trying out for the 16 and under teams for the National Championships to be held later in the year in Hobart, 28th September to 3rd of October 2010.

Hobart will host the 16 and Under National Championships this year.

The Championships are being held from 28 September - 3 October 2010.

TWPI are seeking expressions of interest from qualified persons, willing to attend the Championships and represent Tasmania as either the Girls referee or Boys referee. Expressions of interest are required in writing to David Salter ASAP (post or email).

State training for 16 and Under players is 6:00am tuesday and thursday mornings at the Dive Pool THAC, details from boys coach John Cody 0437 710 590 and girls coach Nat Symmons 0418 128 425.

The College Boys Grand Final was a sensational game filled with skills and action.
The scores were even after full time and still a draw after extra time, still a draw after a second extra time. The game then went to a penalty shoot out, but after all the shots the scores were still even. With both sides trying for so long it was then down to "golden goal", where the first team to not score on the next penalty shot would loose. But both teams were excellent in the shooting as the tension mounted, eventually the Hutchin's goalie saved a shot to give them the win.

State teams had a great trip to the Brisbane Nationals 28 September - October 2009

HOW TO PLAY (SUMMARY)

INTERESTED IN PLAYING? HERE IS A BRIEF SUMMARY OF HOW TO PLAY-
The objective of the game is to manouvre the ball into the goals at either end of the pool. Each team has seven players (one of whom is the goalie) in the water, with up to 5 interchange players. You can only use one hand to advance the ball (only the goalie can use two hands).
The game (& each quarter) begins with the ball in the centre of the pool and each team sprints for it from their own goal line. The defensive player is not allowed to interfere with the opponents movements unless he/she is holding the ball. A minor foul is awarded for this offence. The attacking player must then either pass the ball, drop it on the water and pick it up again, or shoot (if inside 5 metres). A penalty shot, from 5 metres is awarded for fouls near the goal that prevented a probable goal- Its a bit like soccer in the water!
There are unlimited substitutes so you can play in short bursts (which often suites beginners).
For the full rules of the game see the rules link above.
THE GAME IS LOADS OF FUN, GREAT EXERCISE AND PLAYED BY SOME OF THE FINEST HUMAN BEINGS ON THE PLANET.. so get along to your nearest club and have a go!   Ages 10 to 50+
